Carmen is improving!
Jan. 6th, 2009 08:29 pmFor those of you who didn't know, Carmen (my PA kitty) has hyperthyroidism. This was causing her to lose weight, and she only weighed about 6 pounds to begin with. There wasn't a lot to lose! Mom and dad were giving her medicine twice a day, but Carmen hated that. They tried liquids, flavored liquids, mixing it with her food, putting it in a treat, just forcing it in her mouth... Nothing made it easier. In dad's words they were "tormenting" her. They stopped giving Carmen the medicine because dad said quality of life was more important. At Thanksgiving she was practically skin and bones when I picked her up. Someone in
cat_lovers suggested putting ointment in her ear as opposed to an oral treatment, and the vet gave them some ointment. Carmen liked the ointment much better than the medicine so mom and dad have been using that since a bit after Thanksgiving. She seemed to weigh a bit more at Christmas, but I couldn't be sure. Well, she had some blood tests done on the 2nd, and it's official. The medicine is working! The vet wants to see her again in six weeks, but so far she's improving. I'm so glad. She is 13, but that doesn't mean we're ready to say goodbye! *hugs my kitty*
