Cat Thoughts
Aug. 2nd, 2008 05:38 pmI love my kittens. I know, I'm stating the obvious; I do that. I was thinking about them today while I was running errands though, and I realized that there's a different dynamic between me and my kittens then there has been between me and my previous cats. This will likely sound a bit disjointed since my thoughts aren't fully organized. Bear with me. With Cupcake, Petunia, and Carmen I was living at home, so the cats interacted not only with me but with my mom, dad, and brother too. The houses were bigger than my apartment, so the cats had places they could go and hide if they needed to get away. I wasn't always the primary caretaker either, especially with Cupcake and Petunia, and then even with Carmen when I went away to school. I was Cupcake's favorite, but Petunia and Carmen (especially Carmen!) preferred my dad. Of course they also spent time with me, my mom, and my brother. I rode in the car on the way to the vet, but it was usually mom who made the appointments (again, this was especially the case when I was younger). She bought the food and litter too, although I might come along to the market.
With Lyric and Lyre it's all me. If I feel sick (and I might be getting a cold, ugh) I still have to get up and feed the cats. I've made all the vet appointments, and of course I dealt with Lyre when he fractured his leg. I feed them, play with them, and pet them. Now, I'm not complaining about any of this. It was my choice to get cats, and I knew what went into caring for them. I'm just commenting. The dynamic I was talking about earlier is their connection to me. Carmen loves me and will sit in my lap, but she also tends to wander around the house wherever she wants to go stopping on mom or dad's laps too. Lyric and Lyre prefer to be in the same room I'm in, sometimes on the same piece of furniture. They can go under the chair, bed, and couch, but usually if they're underneath furniture it's because they're playing, not hiding from me. That's understandable since I live alone, and I should have expected it. It still came as a bit of a (usually pleasant) surprise though. It can be annoying when they want to walk on my keyboard, but I love it when they join me on the couch or in bed. Also, I don't really have a goo way to end this so I'm going to stop here with some pictures.
