For those of you who may not know, I'm in a choir here at UT, and some of the members are going to NYC this summer, and we get to perform in Carnegie Hall. I'm very excited, and I really want to go to Carnegie Hall, but we have rehearsals Monday nights and some days in April. There are two issues there. One, I have class Monday nights, so I have to miss some class periods so I can get to some rehearsals. Two, with all the assignments I have due, I don't really have time to drive out to Farragut and be there from 6-9. If I were in class at least I could get things done while listening to the teacher. Last night I took some reading with me to the rehearsal in the vain hopes of having time to do some of it. Yeah, that didn't happen.

Still all that aside the rehearsal was not as bad as I thought it would be. For one thing we got out about 15 minutes early, and I got back to my apartment to do some homework. I also discovered that I was not playing catch up (for missing last week's rehearsal) as badly as I thought I would have to. The thing is, the people going to Carnegie Hall are about half members of the women's and men's choirs, and half the members of concert choir and chamber singers. The concert choir and chamber singers have already seen the Carnegie Hall music since they'll be performing it at their Spring Concert. I'm not a member of either of those choirs (I'm in the women's choir), but that actually helped me. I cannot sight read to save my life, but if people around me know what they're singing, and I have the music in front of me then I can generally pick it up pretty easily. I have a good ear. So most of the sopranos sitting around me knew what they were singing, and voila! I wasn't anywhere close to perfect, but I don't think I sounded too much like this was the first time I'd seen the music in my life either. This bodes well.

And now back to homework.
