Work-wise there are a lot of things that haven't changed:

-2 branches will still be closing
-some people will be laid off
-we don't know who
-our budget was cut
-our hours were cut

No changes to any of that. What I did find out when I got to work this morning is that our branch will be closing so that the new branch (7 miles down the road) can open. This decision is not part of the two other branches that will be closing. This does not mean that everyone my branch will be transferred to a new branch. Really besides the fact that our branch is closing, we don't know a whole lot. People from headquarters were here this morning to speak to us, but they don't have a whole lot of answers at this point. I personally think it's stupid to open a new branch in favor of closing an existing one, but they board of directors apparently doesn't. They did give us some reasons for this decision though:

-Hamilton Mill (new branch) is located within seven miles of the Dacula (my branch) and the Buford branches. It would continue to provide needed library service in the region.

-The Hamilton Mill location will provide service to a new set of customers but it is anticipated that it would also draw customers from Dacula and Buford.

-The Dacula collection is very new. Much of it can be transferred to Hamilton Mill which will save on the cost of new materials for the branch.

-The Dacula branch has the number of staff needed to staff a 20,000 square foot facility. Utilizing existing staff from the system would address this ongoing cost.

-The Dacula branch can be re-purposed for activities that support the operation of the entire library system. For example, we want to start a collection of greater depth that could serve as a starting point for a future central library collection and also offset ILL costs for items not owned by the library.

At this point, that's what we know. Not a lot. My supervisors have said they will keep us updated as they information. I think I'm going to start job hunting.
