So, yesterday we found out that the library has been asked to cut its budget by 10%. We've managed to cut 7% so far. Among the changes are: firing the shelvers, no more security guards, materials budget getting cut by 8%, fewer programs, cancellation of the Gwinnett Reading Festival, and closing the library for two days a week and shortening the hours we're open. The library's old hours looked like this:
Monday-Thursday - 9:00 - 9:00
Friday and Saturday - 9:00 - 6:00
Sunday - 1:00 - 6:00.

The new hours are these:
Sunday and Monday - Closed
Tuesday - Thursday - 10:00 - 7:00
Friday and Saturday - 10:00 - 6:00

I suspected we might have to close Sunday or even one of the longer days, but I did not foresee us being closed 2 days. On the plus side, we still have our jobs. They also think we might even be able to still work 40 hours per week, so our pay wouldn't go down. Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, we've only cut our budget 7%, and the county wanted a 10% cut. We're still not sure what's going to happen. More changes could be on the way though. I'm also not thrilled about the fact that we might end up working every Saturday. Every other Saturday I could handle, and I hope the schedule works out so we could do that. If not I'll deal with it, but I won't be too happy. Still, at least I'm employed. These changes take effect August 9th.

I also had a second surprise dropped on me yesterday, although it was not as big as the library's. My dad has been talking about retiring. That's not news. He said yesterday that he's thinking of doing it "soon". I asked what "soon" meant (a day? week? month?), and he replied, "Actually I closed the office a week ago. I didn't want you to worry." Oh. Gee, thanks for keeping me in the loop dad. I'm not worried that he's retired. He can make his own decision about that. I worry about his health, but that's a lot more serious than him deciding to stop working. Actually, he still goes in most days. The office needs to be packed up, and final bills are still be sent out to patients. He's not seeing patients anymore though.

No more surprises anytime soon, okay world? I'm ready for my long weekend in Savannah!
