Global Warming
Jan. 21st, 2009 09:40 amI just read this article on cnn.com stating that a majority of surveyed scientists agree that global warming is real and that humans are a cause of it. The scientists were asked two questions:
1. Have mean global temperatures risen compared to pre-1800s levels?
2. Has human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures?
90% of the scientists answered yes to the first question and 82% to the second. Among specific types of scientists 97% of climatologists agreed humans play a role in global warming while only 47% of petroleum geologists thought humans contributed.
My response to the article: duh! Of course global warming is real! Absolutely humans are causing it! Global warming has really only been a big item in the news for the past several years, but I've been hearing about "the greenhouse effect" from my dad since the 80's. He was always telling my brother and I not to waste energy, and we had to have a darn good reason for having the lights on during the day. In fact, if dad saw the lights on in a room and he was outside he'd walk inside (sometimes a long way - we had a big yard) to make sure someone was in the room to use the light. It became ingrained in me to turn off things when we're not using them, and I keep the thermostat fairly low in the winter and fairly high in the summer. I even turn off lights in other people's houses; it's force of habit. Because of all this, it kind of boggles my mind that there are still people out there that don't believe global warming exists and that humans are not causing it. One or two cold winters doesn't mean it's fake. And if you talk to older people (my dad included) they'll tell you about much colder winters than we've been having (on average) in the past 10 years or so. Even if it's in the 20's dad will claim it "never gets cold anymore" or "we never have winter anymore". He shouldn't let himself get so upset by things he has no control over, but that doesn't mean he's wrong. Global warming is real people!
Note: I'm pretty sure most people in my flist know it's real, but it makes me angry (hence the rant) when people question the reality.
