Grandma's Diary
Aug. 7th, 2007 11:12 pmMy maternal grandmother kept a diary from 1935 to 1945, and she wrote in it literally everyday. I have a transcribed copy of the first five years. For the most part it's really interesting, especially since she passed away in 1996. I love hearing about historical events from someone who actually lived them. It's also interesting to from a financial prospective. She talks about a "big" paycheck for the week of $7.10 as well as buying three pairs of shoes for $6. She also made most of her dresses as opposed to buying them. And a radio for Christmas in 1936 was the most amazing thing ever. After she got married my grandma and her husband had to turn down a house they really wanted because the rent of $40 per month was too expensive. I'm also learning a lot about her in general. Since she lived across the country from my family growing up I never got to see her as much as my paternal grandmother. She did once tell me that I was exactly like her because I always had a book in my hand. I do wish some of the entries contained more information though; I have lots of questions.
While reading it earlier this evening I came across an entry for November 6, 1938 that started with the sentence, "More fun today - which started with Harry & I taking a shower together." Yes, Harry was her husband at the time, but I did not want that image of my grandmother in my mind. I even freaked about a bit when the first couple years talked about her dating a Lloyd. I was thinking, "My grandfather's name was Harry. Who's this Lloyd guy??" Obviously my grandmother had a life before meeting her future husband, but it still bothered me a bit. I am going to continue reading and hope for no more disturbing images.
