I have to say my book for my 585 class, Information Technologies, is very, well, basic. And considering how little I know about computers, that's pretty surprising. I was willing to cut chapter 1 some slack. I figured the first chapter wouldn't get very technical. But really... Some of what they told me included: the difference between an input and an output device. Remember, the keyboard is input, and the printer is output. That piece of information came after they told me what a keyboard, mouse, printer, moniter, etc. actually were. They even explained the difference between a desktop and a laptop computer.
Okay, that was the chapter 1; like I said, I was willing to cut it some slack. I just finished chapter 2. That chapter told me about dial-up versus DSL versus cable internet access. It defined the phrases "world wide web" and "web page" as well as the terms "downloading" and "uploading". It even explained how to IM, e-mail, and click on links!! People who don't know how to click on links should not touch computers.
My favorie part though was at the end of the chapter in the Learn How To section. Had I actually bothered to read the section I would have learned how to: 1. Change a browser's homepage. That's really hard. 2. Create and use my own weblog. Nope, I have no clue how to do that. 3. Bid on and buy a product from eBay. Even my dad can do that.
Some of the articles we read to supplement the book are pretty interesting, but if the book keeps up like this I may cry. Or just stop reading it entirely.
